While on my morning muse around the lake I had a sudden insight, which is this: Conservatives think that life is horrible; so horrible that there must be a reason beyond life itself for all the pain and suffering of life; that our pain and suffering somehow must be in the service of or makes sense in the context of something larger than our own lives; that there must be something beyond our own lives that justifies our pain and suffering.
The life of an atheist, however, stands on its own. Good or bad, pain and suffering, an atheist does not look beyond his life for justification or meaning. It is what it is. It seems to me there is something noble in one who has the courage to face the horribleness of life without blinking.
